Slug Best Practices for Evergreen SEO Pages

Every URL change costs a small amount of link equity and a re-crawl delay, even with a correct redirect. Rules for picking a slug once and never needing to "clean it up" later.

Stable URLs compound; changing URLs reset the clock

Every URL change, even with a correct 301 redirect, introduces some link-equity loss and a re-crawl delay before Google fully transfers signals to the new address. Google's guidance on site moves documents this explicitly for full migrations, and the same mechanics apply at the single-URL level. Pick a slug once, and only change it when the content itself has fundamentally changed.

Rules that hold up over years, not months

  • Use the primary phrase, not the full headline — /blog/gsc-content-priorities, not /blog/how-to-turn-gsc-impressions-into-content-priorities-2026.
  • Never bake a date or year into an evergreen slug. Content refreshed annually shouldn't need a new URL annually.
  • Lowercase, hyphen-separated, no stop words unless they change meaning — "vs" stays, "the" and "a" go.

Where this connects to publishing tooling

If you're publishing through a CMS integration — WordPress, Framer, or a custom webhook — slug behavior differs by platform. WordPress lets an editor rename a slug from the post editor with no warning; Framer CMS ties slugs to collection item IDs by default. PrismSEO's slug generator standardizes the format before it reaches your CMS, which removes the most common source of accidental slug drift.

What "good enough" looks like

You don't need a perfect slug taxonomy from day one — you need one that a reasonable person wouldn't feel compelled to "clean up" six months from now. That tidying instinct is exactly what creates redirect debt.
